Star Wars fatigue should be a medically recognised condition at this point, like a geek version of Long COVID. But an antidote may be coming. 2027 is the 50th Anniversary of the release of Star Wars, and Disney are throwing us a bone.
Following a screening at the BFI earlier this year, the original, unfucked, 1977 print of Star Wars will hit cinemas worldwide on 19th February 2027.
That means Greedo shooting first, no episode 4 subtitle, no Jabba cameo and hopefully Aunt Beru’s original voice. I have been telling people for years that her dialogue has been dubbed over from the version I saw as a kid. I noticed the change in the way she says ‘I think so’ after Uncle Owen asks her if Luke took the droids with him. Now I finally get my chance to prove it.

With Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter also set for a 2027 release, could things finally be looking up for Star Wars?
I can’t wait to see the original print, but perhaps I should temper my expectations. Some reviews of the BFI screening indicated that some of it looks a bit shoddy.
George Lucas’ tinkering began way earlier than the 1997 special edition (the one we mostly hate). Many subtle changes to the picture and sound over the years (Aunt Beru’s voice aside) may have been beneficial to the overall film, but there will be interesting talking points come 2027.
