Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is one of those movies that just gets it right. Is it in people’s favourite movies of all time? No, but it is fun, silly and has some great moments. Adding in Mira Sorvino and how unbelievably gorgeous she looks, you got yourself a movie.
Talk of a sequel has been doing the rounds since the original movie in 1997. The phrase ‘Capturing lightning in a bottle’ springs to mind, and is something you can’t do twice. Especially not after 28 years.
According to THR, both Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, the original stars, are in final talks to reprise their roles as Romy and Michele. The sequel is being made by 20th Century Studios and both ladies will be producers.
The original writer, Robin Schiff, will pen a new script and Tim Federle will direct. Federle is known for one of the movies and a couple of the TV series of High School Musicals. Funnily enough, I have missed them, like I miss having Tiktok on my phone.
The original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion wasn’t a huge box office smash but gained cult status on VHS and DVD. It had a killer soundtrack and hit all the right notes with the ‘memberberries, which were done before it got out of hand.
Sorvino was asked about a sequel a year ago:
“They’ve done (the director’s) deal, they’ve done Lisa (Kudrow) and my deals as executive producers. (Original screenwriter Robin Schiff) has written multiple drafts of an amazing funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans.
And they’re just going back and forth, tweaking things here and there, and [there are] rumors of shooting it second quarter next year…But it’s not officially greenlit, so I can’t say that it’s officially greenlit.“
Again, according to reports, shooting could start as soon as June this year. Would you be up for a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel? While you ponder that question, I’ll post some images of Mira Sorvino for, umm, research purposes.
