Savage Holiday Box Office

Was it the weather? Was it the World Cup? Whatever the reason, a traditional big box office weekend was a bust.

Universal’s previous juggernaut franchise suffered first, with Minions & Monsters coming in way under projections with $36 million for the domestic three-day. This is less than half of the expected level.

Minions

Remember, when Supergirl did those number a couple of weeks ago, it was touted as the death of the DCU.

Minions & Monsters did grab a life raft overseas, with another $86 million.

No life raft for Supergirl. The drop off was savage. 77% in the second weekend. Ouch! For context, it is just a bit lower than The Marvels (78%) or Joker: Folie a Deux (81%).

It needs to make $200 million to even limp to a $100 million loss. This looks like a stretch at this stage. Unless it finds an audience on PVOD, it is probably toast.

It was in fourth. Minions and Supergirl were split by Toy Story 5 with another $30.3 million.

They were also split by another movie. Given the weekend, it was no surprise to see Young Washington doing well with $19.3 million.

All eyes now turn to The Odyssey to see if the summer can be saved, or if Toy Story 5 will have to do it alone.
