The TCA winners have just been announced, and one show won big. FX’s Shogun managed an incredible feat. It was the very definition of “blue balls” television, constantly threatening to explode into a Game Of Thrones scale conflict, but stayed faithful to the book and remained focused. Yet, somehow, it managed to remain absolutely gripping TV.
It has just been named in a press release as the winner of most awards at the 40th annual Television Critics Association awards. The adaptation of the James Clavell novel won Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Drama, Individual Achievement in Drama for Anna Sawai, and Outstanding New Program.
This lines it up for a good run at the Emmy’s, with nominations due to be announced for that shortly.
The TCA press release also names Hacks (on Max) with two honors – Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Individual Achievement in Comedy (Jean Smart).
Baby Reindeer snags best telemovie/mini-series, Doctor Who gets best family programming, Bluey wins best children’s programming.
The Traitors won best reality programming, with Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV winning best news programming.
The Heritage Award went to Twin Peaks and the Career Achievement Award went to the late Andre Braugher.
Tonight will be the first TCA ceremony for a while. The two COVID years were cancelled, as was last years ceremony due to the strikes.
The TCA awards have existed since 1984 when members of the Television Critics Association declared that they, as professional consumers of the medium, were best placed to spot exemplary work in television. They have since lauded their own abilities as their picks line up for the Emmy and Peabody awards.
