Shawn Levy has frequently said that his aim with Star Wars: Starfighter is to do something fresh within the Star Wars universe.
The project is referred to as “all new” and a “standalone adventure” that is set in an era of Star Wars we have never seen before – five years after the final defeat of Palpatine and the collapse of the First Order as per The Rise Of Skywalker.

So Star Wars is going forward, not back.
Despite all of this, the rumors still swirl that the plot features Ryan Gosling’s character transporting a young boy who is strong in the force across the galaxy to join Rey’s new Jedi academy.
This led to speculation that Rey would appear, at least in a cameo.
Not so, says the film’s writer Jonathan Tropper.
He has given an interview to Screen Rant where he was clear this is an entirely new story and they have deliberately avoided fan service.
“Obviously, lightsabers are a part of that universe and that part of that galaxy. I’m so careful not to reveal anything, but essentially, I think it’s known that we have no legacy characters. You’re not going to see any of the characters you’ve seen in the other movies.
So there are certain things that are still hallmarks of Star Wars that it’s good to have in there. But more than that, I can’t say.”
Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams co-star in Star Wars: Starfighter which is released on May 28th 2027.
