Man, Patty Jenkins has got to be absolutely raging! Her Rogue Squadron movie was yet another victim of Lucasfilm’s inability to get a project off the ground, and then along comes Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling with their new Star Wars project – Star Wars: Starfighter.
The big reveal was just made at Star Wars Celebration, currently underway in Japan.
Gosling himself showed up on stage, and in order to boost his Star Wars cred, he even shared a picture his mother had sent them of a young Gosling aged just five in his Star Wars bedsheets. Gosling had this to say about the project:
“This script is so good. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
This is a standalone adventure with no connection to the so-called Skywalker Saga and it is set years after Rise Of Skywalker.
This, of course, relies on Lucasfilm not messing this up as well. At this stage, they have announced more Star Wars projects that never made it to the screen than there are actual Star Wars movies.
They still seem to genuinely believe that a new trilogy of movies is coming from Simon Kinberg, alongside projects from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Taika Waititi. All of these were “confirmed” at the event, despite them being announced years ago and going largely AWOL since.
To coincide with the announcement, the official Star Wars Twitter (X) account revealed the logo in a video tease:
