Earlier this year, it was announced that House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock had won the role of Supergirl for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Supergirl is expected to appear in a cameo in another DC movie before making her full debut in her own feature.
Supergirl is due to start filming this autumn, making it the first movie to start production after Superman: Legacy finishes principal photography by this summer.
So it needs a director, and the hunt is underway. According to a report in Deadline, the project has somebody in their sights. Cruella and I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct. He is meeting with Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios.
Born and raised in Sydney, Gillespie moved to New York City at the age of nineteen to study illustration, graphic design, and advertising at Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts.
Gillespie started out as an intern at ad agency J. Walter Thompson, New York. He then moved on to D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, BBDO, Deutsch, and Ammirati & Puris, first as an art director, later as a creative director. After eight years working on the agency side he moved into directing in 1995. Based on the strength of his spec reel and agency experience, he gained representation by production company Fahrenheit Films in late 1995.
He also won a Golden Lion Award at 2005’s Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, and two of his commercials belong to the Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan’s permanent collection.
His other movie directing credits include Lars and the Real Girl (2007), and the criminally underrated Fright Night remake (2011).
Supergirl will be based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow with Ana Nogueira adapting the script. In a previous interview about this version of the character, Gunn said:
“Supergirl was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Gunn and Peter Safran will produce, with Chantal Nong as executive producer.
