Scooper Jeff Sneider has dropped some hints in his latest report that Superman may have quite a few surprises up his sleeve… or down his trunks… or under his cape… or wherever. No, not the nonsensical ability to suddenly throw giant cellophane ‘S’ shapes around, memory-wiping kisses, or a sudden thirst to beat up a trucker. This is in the casting department.
Apparently, quite a few casting surprises have been successfully kept under wraps until now. The roles will be cameos and small, but key, parts to both fill in the backstory and hint at the wider DC Universe.
One rumor is that Tom Cruise will appear in one of these cameos as part of his new deal at Warner Bros. The internet speculation has already started to run riot that Cruise will appear as Jor-El, Superman’s father.
Some early test screenings also generated rumors of some surprising villain cameos.
We already know Jason Momoa will play intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, but he is not expected to appear until Supergirl: The Woman Of Tomorrow.
The central theme of this version of Superman explores Clark Kent’s struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with the values instilled in him by his adoptive human family in Smallville, Kansas. This is against the backdrop of him not being the lone super-powered being on Earth, with some of them perhaps not behaving as they should, given their abilities.
Superman strives to be an inspiration and a symbol of hope, which brings him into conflict with some of these others, and with some of the more cynical wider world that sees values such as truth and justice as old fashioned.
Meanwhile, billionaire industrialist Lex Luthor has his own agenda, and Kal-El must not be allowed to get in his way.
Superman is scheduled to be released theatrically on July 11th, 2025.
