SUPERMAN Holds Second Week At The Box Office

A second weekend on release, and Superman predictably held off any challengers for the number one slot at the box office for another week. James Gunn’s cinematic universe opener has now made $210 million domestically and has passed the $400 million mark worldwide. Speaking about the numbers, Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory, said:

“We’ve seen really strong daily holds and usually that is indicative of word of mouth kicking in, especially on a big film like this that already opened pretty well.”

A box office take of $58 million domestically in its second weekend indicates a drop of 54%, level with Deadpool and Wolverine, and way ahead of recent superhero release Captain America: Brave New World (68%).

Also hanging on, Jurassic World Rebirth stayed second with $23.7 million in its third weekend, a decent 43% drop over the prior weekend and $649 million global total. The movie proves that dinosaurs continue to be a draw and the Jurassic World universe will no doubt keep on trucking.

I Know What You Did Last Summer came in third with an opening of around $13-14 million. It will be OK as it only cost $18 million.

Smurfs, starring Rhianna, was in fourth with $12 million and was ahead of expectations… which was nice.

F1 rounded out the top five with another $10 million in the bank and $463 million worldwide in total. It is rumored not to be making an Apple TV+ debut until late August, so still plenty of time to catch it on the big screen.
