Maggie Gyllenhaal is directing The Bride, a retelling of The Bride of Frankenstein from 1935 and then again in 1985. The Bride is about poor Frankenstein’s monster looking for a date. OK, that’s oversimplifying it, the actual plot has more to it:

In 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They give life to a murdered woman as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change.

The cast, at the moment, is Christian Bale, Annette Bening, Jessie Buckley, Penelope Cruz, Julianne Hough and Peter Sarsgaard. Gyllenhaal is writing and directing the movie, based on the work of Mary Shelley. Images are now online of The Bride, played by Buckley, and Bale as the Monster.

Bale looks like he’s going to be a rap video. There’s a joke there somewhere, but I don’t know enough about rap to make it. Buckley looks like she’s in a perfume advert.

Universal isn’t producing this new version of The Bride. According to reports, Scarlett Johansson was attached to a similar project, produced by A24 and Apple, but that never made it past the development stages.

Are you interested in seeing The Bride? I’m guessing it has to be better than the Sting version, which I haven’t seen, but now I kind of want to.
