This weekend, as you relax with your family or take some well-deserved “me” time, or even if you are working and you need something to momentarily distract you from wage slavery, what you really need is a good argument! Don’t worry. Here at Last Movie Outpost, we have your back. The Great Debate returns.
Put on your best argumentative pants and prepare to lock horns with the only people that matter when it comes to movies. Your fellow Outposters.
This week, we could end up settling an age-old question… who is the greatest director of all time? But wait! How do you settle such a debate? Well, it has to be by judging their work in context and by ratio.
What do we mean by a “Tier 1” movie, and all that other guff about context and ratios? Well, let us put it like this. If you were to ask a normo about the greatest directors of all time, some of them might name Ridley Scott.
To which an Outposter would say that Alien is, indeed, a Tier 1 movie. Other might include Blade Runner, Gladiator, or even Black Rain on the list. Then it all gets spoiled when you expand that list. Napoleon and Gladiator II didn’t hit the spot. His filmography also includes G.I. Jane, A Good Year, Hannibal, Prometheus, Exodus: Gods And Kings…
You see? It doesn’t take long for the context and ratio to really damage any potential ranking.
What about Spielberg? Any normo would consider him in with a shout. To which I would say that yes, Jaws and Raiders Of The Lost Ark are clearly tier 1 movies. However, I also consider Close Encounters a wildly unfocused movie that doesn’t really make any sense under examination. ET is schmaltzy nonsense, and Jurassic Park is a safe adaptation of a much better book.
By the time you start to layer in projects like the fourth Indiana Jones movie, Ready Player One, and The Adventures Of Tin Tin then the wheels really start to come off.
So here is the debate for today.
Which director has the greatest ratio of Tier 1 movies?
Gentleman… start your shouting!
