Sweet Baby Jesus! How in the name of all that is holy is The Mummy a quarter of a century old? I remember going to see this in the theater like it was yesterday. Christ… I am so old now. Face it, Outposters. It really is all downhill from here.
To celebrate our impending demise, and the 25th anniversary of the movie, Universal Pictures is re-releasing it to theaters.
The movie came out at a time when audiences made a lot of films that were in theaters pretty much critic-proof. Filmmakers were really embracing the new possibilities presented by computers for VFX work, and CGI was absolutely everywhere. A direct line could be followed from Jurassic Park, through Independence Day and right up to movies like The Mummy. Audiences were eating it up.
Critics were sniffy, but we didn’t care. It was all so much fun.
Universal have created a new trailer and a poster to mark the event.
Stephen Sommers’ 1999 action-adventure film follows an expedition to the Sahara Desert in 1925. Adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with a librarian (Rachel Weisz) and her older brother (John Hannah).
They unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old horror. The vengeful reincarnation of an Egyptian priest who had been sentenced to an eternity as one of the living dead.
The Mummy made $416.4 million worldwide gross from an $80 million budget and spawned two sequels. Its straightforward thrills and complete lack of pretension mean it has actually grown in stature over time as a movie.
Kevin J. O’Connor, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr, Jonathan Hyde, Omid Djalili, Erick Avari, and Patricia Velásquez co-star.
The Mummy is back in theaters for one week only from April 26th.
