Trailer: Apple’s CAPE FEAR

Apple TV maintains a quality hit rate that other streaming platforms could only dream of. It feels like a more boutique provider, compared to the mass market churn of some of the others, or brand-led Disney+. Will it keep up that enviable quality rate with Cape Fear?

The full trailer for the new ten-episode adaptation of the psychological horror based on the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. That was the source material for the 1962 film with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and then inspired the Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis version.

That was directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Steven Spielberg. They are both back as Executive Producers on this new version.

Happily married attorneys Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson) get a shock when Max Cady (Javier Bardem), the notorious killer they are responsible for putting behind bars, is let out of prison. He wants vengeance.

The trailer shows Bardem, complete with green-eyed contact lenses. The style seems sufficiently different from both previous versions to feel like they might be bringing something new to the table.

CCH Pounder, Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Jamie Hector, Malia Pyles, and Anna Baryshnikov co-star. Nick Antosca (A Friend of the Family, The Act) is writing and will showrun the series.

Antosca was a fan of both Cape Fear movies since childhood, and he asked Universal for permission to develop an adaptation of them. He began development of the series through his deal with Universal Content Productions along with Amblin Television. Development of the show was first announced in November 2023.

Alex Hedlund, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Morten Tyldum also executive produce, with Tyldum helming the pilot.

Cape Fear begins on June 5th with two episodes, followed by weekly releases.
