How do you take a relatively brief and compact 250-page Stephen King novel and turn it into an entire series? We are about to find out with Carrie.
The Amazon Prime Video adaptation is the latest project from Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House series creator Mike Flanagan. While it is based on Stephen King’s debut novel, obviously it is going to have to expand the story considerably over other film versions to adapt it as an eight-episode series.
Flanagan previously confirmed that it will be different, and that those looking for a faithful adaptation of the book will not find what they are looking for. He said he doesn’t need to adapt it closely, as Brian DePalma’s 1976 version already did that job.
The new take opens up the scale and the world, introducing other characters with abilities.
This follows misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Summer Howell) as her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, having spent her youth under the watchful eye and control of her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan).
A viral bullying scandal erupts in the community, exposing her to the casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the relentless pressure to conform. This results in the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers.
The cast includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Carrie is released on Prime Video on October 7th.
