TRON: ARES To End Franchise, Leto

TRON: Ares is not doing well. It had decidedly mixed audience scores, it got something of a critical mauling and was more than $10 million down on its opening projections.

With the core TRON audience of young males failing to turn out for it, it becomes the third TRON movie on the bounce to raise both critical and commercial questions. This movie cost $180 million.

Now, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, as far as Disney is concerned the franchise is over on the big screen. They do have a shiny new ride at Disney World to pimp, though.

The article is also not too positive about Jared Leto’s commercial viability or his leading man status.

The article cites sources who say that that was a much different version of the script that was shelved when Leto came on board, and the focus was changed to centre on his character.

Leto was also the promotional face of the movie. After Morbius, and now this, Jared Leto’s time as a leading man appears to be done.

The article quotes a talent manager saying:

“In a world where Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Benedict Cumberbatch are having a hard time getting lead roles, why would you even go to a person who can’t open a movie and who has question marks around him as a person?”

The article points to his next role, as Skeletor in Masters Of The Universe, as being key to his career. A chance to play a character in an ensemble that allows him to lean into some camp fun could be a good move.
