We’ve just had November 5th, and in the UK, we call it the 5th of November. It’s also Bonfire Night, where we remember the Gunpowder Plot. This tells the story of a man called Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the British Parliament. Annoyingly, people stopped him, but that slice of British history inspired Alan Moore to create stories like V for Vendetta.
Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman were in the original 2005 movie. It was the directorial debut of James McTeigue, from a screenplay by the Wachowskis, umm, sisters, or were they brothers at the time? The film raked in just under $135 million and won rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. V for Vendetta storms back into cinemas in 2026 for its 20th anniversary.

DC own the rights for V for Vendetta, so James Gunn and Peter Safran will be executive producers of the new show, for HBO. Both are currently producing The Lanterns, another DC property, as a show for HBO, which is set for release next year.
There is no news on the story or casting for this new version of V for Vendetta, but we’ll keep you posted.
The Original
Just to give you a bit of history around the Gunpowder Plot, here is the original poem about it.
Remember, remember, the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, ’twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament
Three score barrels of powder below
Poor old England to overthrow
By God’s providence he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys
God save the King!
Never let it be said that we don’t provide a bit of culture here at the Last Movie Outpost.
