Wan On HP Lovecraft’s CALL OF CTHULHU

HP Lovecraft was an odd man with quite the imagination. I’m no expert on his work, but I know he made some interesting stories and created Cthulhu.

Lovecraft’s work has been adapted many times over the years, The Dunwich Horror, Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dagon. The IMDb has over 40 listed.

Weirdly, I watched Dagon the other day, and had fun with it. The main issue was how dated it was; the effects were bad, but then, the acting wasn’t much better. About 80% of the movie was the main protagonist ‘running away from something’. I thought to myself while watching it ‘Has anyone done Lovecraft well?’

Lovecraft Country didn’t, that’s for sure. Does anyone remember that series? It got a little preachy from the start and never let up. All I remember about that show was Jamie Chung in the nude. Yes, I know straight afterwards she turned into a multi-tentacled sucubus, but still.

Back on topic, it seems that James Wan is working on a movie of Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu. In an interview with ScreenRant, Wan said the project “he’s been wanting to do for a while.” He also said that Lovecraft movies “are not cheap.” This is true; they didn’t have the budget for Dagon, that’s for sure.

Wan said that he will get the movie made, but it’s not moving quickly. At the moment, he’s involved with the Saw reboot, and he has also signed to make an English version of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount Pictures.

Will Wan do Lovecraft justice? Has anyone in the past?
