Who doesn’t love a good werewolf yarn? Strangely, they seem difficult to get right, with perhaps only two in the genre being able to be considered as true greats. In this regard, they are like shark movies. Will Werewolves change that?
Probably not, but it could be fun finding out. Originally titled Year 2, the movie tells of a time one year on from when a very specific lunar event triggered a gene in some people, transforming them into werewolves.
One year later, and when the lunar event is set to happen again, this time the world is taking no chances. For a start, it has Frank Grillo and a shit load of guns on standby.
Joining Grillo are Katrina Law, Ilfenesh Hadera, James Michael Cummings, and the low-key legend that is Lou Diamond Phillips.
Produced in June 2022, the horror action thriller is directed and co-produced by Steven C. Miller and shot in Puerto Rico, with Matthew Kennedy writing the screenplay. None of these things scream out as classic ingredients.
There is one untapped werewolf story out there that is exceptional, and screams to be made into a series on a streamer – The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan. Last heard the rights were being sat on by Ridley Scott’s production house, Scott Free. Properly adapted, that has the potential to be an all-time classic in the genre.
As for this? Werewolves, guns, and Grillo. Surely it can’t be all bad?
Werewolves is scheduled to be released in the United States by Briarcliff Entertainment on December 6, 2024.
