WONKA Showing Legs

Doubters will be eating humble pie. Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow, and Heyday Films’ Wonka is proving to be a box office juggernaut. It is demonstrating the kind of staying power that only your Mom can appreciate.

This movie has legs. Very long legs. Despite being released for a month, it is still riding high at the domestic box office. This weekend it crossed the $500 million mark worldwide. Yesterday it was at $505.3 million, with $329.1 million of that from outside North America. That is not the end of the good news for Wonka, as it still is yet to open in several major markets.

Wonka

With $71 million in the UK, $21 million in Australia, and $25 million in France it is now Paddington director Paul King’s highest-grossing film ever.

It was just beaten to the top slot by David Ayer’s Jason Statham actioner The Beekeeper, which pulled in over $37 million worldwide.  That revived a boost of $8.1 million from IMAX screenings.

Mean Girls has opened in key markets, and pulled in $34.5 million on it’s debut. Further down, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is pushing on slow and steady, with an international take moving it forward to $373.7 million.

Over the next few weeks the release schedule picks up a bit, starting with Migration, then Argylle, and Madame Web before Dune Part Two arrives.
