Uh-oh! Sound the general alarm. We might have our first big-budget, high-profile box office bomb of the year on our hands in the form of Madame Web. It’s President’s Day holiday weekend, but that doesn’t appear to be saving it.
The Sony-Marvel film opens on Wednesday, February 14th. It is currently tracking at a $25-35 million opening. This weekend, last year, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened to $120.3 million and that was classed as a flop. This is tracking lower than the notorious bomb that was Morbius which grabbed $39 million.
Given Sony and Marvel are currently rumored to be in disagreement over the future direction of Spider-Man, yet another massive ex-SPUMC flop in the Sony column isn’t going to do their position much good when trying to make their case.
Madame Web could even come in below the musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the reggae legend that is currently tracking a $27-33 million launch.
The whole box office seems to be very quiet at the start of this year. The other big opening in February is Argylle, hitting next Friday, and that is tracking in the $20-30 million range.
There is nothing on the radar that looks like it has blockbuster potential until March 1st, when Dune Part Two lands.
