There was speculation that after three core movies, and appearances in Captain America: Civil War and the final two Avengers movies, that Tom Holland would be hanging up the leotard as Spider-Man. Not so. Apparently, he has been having meetings with Sony and Marvel to lay the groundwork for another installment. Producer Amy Pascal, of the Sony e-mails hack, was at the premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and she revealed the plan is to create not just another Spider-Man movie to follow No Way Home, but also movies involving Miles Morales and Spider-Woman, because of course it is.
Hollywood logic. If one is good, then more must be better!
However, she also said the writers’ strike is delaying things, a position confirmed by Holland. At the premiere of his new Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room in New York City, Holland gave an interview to Variety that meetings have started, but are now on hold:
“I can’t talk about that, but I can say that we have been having meetings. We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers. There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point it’s very, very early stages.”
The Crowded Room is more mature fare than the world of Spider-Man and the MCU. Holland both stars in and executive produces the thriller about a man arrested for his involvement in a New York City shooting in 1979. Amanda Seyfried stars as the interrogator that Interviews him, and slowly reveals all his dark secrets.
Any new Spider-Man installment will also have to fit in with MCU plans, including future planned Avengers team-ups and cameo appearances. Sony, meanwhile, has their own Spider-verse (formerly known as SPUMC) featuring Venom, Kraven, and Madame Web all in progress. According to a report by British GQ magazine, the story for part 4 is already locked and it will be linked heavily to the plot of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.
