I’m not gay, but hot damn Geroge Clooney and Brad Pitt are two good-looking fellas. They are both what we wish we looked like to women but, in reality, we probably look like Danny DeVito. Clooney and Pitt are back together in Wolfs, which I watched last night.
Wolfs stars Clooney, Pitt, Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, and Zlatko Buric. Jon Watts writes and directs. Watts is ‘In Like Flynn’ at the moment, after the last two Spider-man movies.
The Story
If you have seen the trailer, we posted a little while ago, you know what the story is:
Two rival fixers cross paths when they’re both called in to help cover up a prominent New York official’s misstep. Over one explosive night, they’ll have to set aside their petty grievances and their egos to finish the job.
It’s a ‘buddy cop’ style bromance movie. I’m fine with that, Clooney and Pitt work well together, see the Ocean movies, 11, 12 and 13.
Margaret (Ryan), a Manhattan D.A., has a dead guy in her room. We’ve all been there, right? Guys? Anyways, she remembers a number, someone gave her, for someone who can help out in these kinds of situations.
She speaks to a ‘man’ (Clooney) on the phone and he tells her to touch nothing and he will be right over. He’s a fixer, a man who can cover up things like this. What he didn’t know was the hotel was watching and the owner sends their own fixer (Pitt).
They don’t like each other but have to work together as things get out of hand for the rest of the evening. There’s no point in me going into details, but I will say the story is fun and unfolds well.
The Cast
Let’s face it, there are two reasons for watching Wolfs, Clooney and Pitt. Their on-screen chemistry just oozes cool. Just like in the Ocean movies, they are trying to out cool each other. For me, this works and I’m happy to watch them.
All I kept thinking was about who cool it would be to hang out with these guys. I mean, I know I would look like Mr Bean next to them, but I would be cool by association. I’m sure the women who didn’t end up with either of them would get drunk enough to take advantage of me.
Back to Wolfs, they are very cool and some of the comic timing is perfect. If you like the Ocean movies, you will like this.
Swearing
I don’t mind swearing in a movie. If someone gets shot, I don’t expect them to say:
‘Oh gosh, I seem to have a wound. It really does chafe somewhat!’
They are going to swear and that’s fine. What I didn’t expect was the swearing in this movie, to me, it was totally unnecessary. I thought this would have been a PG-13, the Ocean movies and Spider-man movies were.
Because I didn’t expect it, it kind of annoyed me. This, however, is my only minor niggle with the movie.
Overall
Wolfs was good fun. I’m not a fan of rom-coms because it’s just two ‘hot leads’ getting together over 2 hours. Wolfs is the same thing, apart from the getting together at the end, that would have been weird.
There is a good story, things obviously spiral out of control and it reaches a satisfying conclusion. I found myself laughing through the movie, there are some great lines and Clooney and Pitt are funny. Watts is a good director, there’s nothing overly special about the photography, apart from one scene. He just let’s the guys do what they do and it works.
As I said, if you like the Ocean movies, you will like Wolfs. It’s just a fun way to pass a couple of hours. It’s now streaming on Apple TV.
