There have been some shennanigans over at Warner Bros. Discovery around the classic Loony Tunes library. Back in 2022, they pulled over 250 shorts from the streaming platform Max. Seasons 16 through 31 were taken off the platform.
Then, more recently, the rest of the shorts appeared in a press release under the section “titles leaving Max”. Warner Bros. tried to say that this was a mistake. Well, it clearly wasn’t, as the rest of the cartoons have now been taken off the streamer.
So what is left? Surprise, surprise, it is all the modern dreck such as the Looney Tunes Cartoon, New Looney Tunes, Baby Looney Tunes, and Bugs Bunny Builders.
Now, Deadline has spoken to the studio and the removal has been confirmed, along with a statement that the streamer will prioritize adult and family programming and that children’s programming such as Looney Tunes and Sesame Street is not a priority as the viewing figures were very low.
This comes on the back of Warner Bros. passing The Day The Earth Blew Up to a third-party distributor and dumping Coyote vs. Acme as a tax write-off.
This is, as you would expect, causing quite a backlash among fans.
Behind a lot of the anger is Warner Bros. treating Looney Tunes simply as “children’s programming” when it is historically significant, was largely theatrical shorts, and includes some Oscar winners.
It seems Hollywood might still be infested with idiots, as suspected.
