Jetsons

THE JETSONS Moving Forward

A live-action adaptation of The Jetsons has been floated as an idea for many years. Pretty much since The Flintstones was a big hit way back in 1994. After drifting forever, it looks like a big name could be about to help drive things forward. Jim Carrey is reportedly in talks to lead a live-action adaptation of the classic cartoon for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Added to that, there is a director being circled, with Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) in talks to both direct The Jetsons, and co-write the script with Joe Epstein.

According to The Wrap, no deals are in place yet, and it is going to be a huge-scale and CGI-heavy affair, so this may take a while to work through the Hollywood system.

The Hanna-Barbera animated sitcom ran from September 23, 1962, to March 17, 1963, on ABC, then later aired in reruns via syndication, with new episodes produced from 1985 to 1987. It was Hanna-Barbera’s Space Age counterpart to The Flintstones.

While the Flintstones lived in a world which was a comical version of the Stone Age, with machines powered by birds and dinosaurs, the Jetsons live in a comical version of the space age, with elaborate robotic contraptions, aliens, holograms, and whimsical inventions. Occupying a hovering home, the family consisted of married couple George and Jane Jetson, their kids Judy and Elroy, their dog Astro, and robot maid Rosie.

It is presumed that Carrey would play George. He most recently appeared as Dr. Robotnik in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, a role he came out of retirement to play again as he “needed the money”.
