Lionsgate has premiered the first trailer for the survival thriller Above the Below, which stars and is co-directed by Idris Elba.
Martin Owen co-directs with Elba, and Above the Below follows three astronauts who survive a disaster in space, but their unscheduled re-entry and crash-landing leave them trapped in the depths of the ocean with no contact with mission control and oxygen rapidly running out. In a race against time where every breath could be their last, the crew faces impossible choices, mounting odds, and new dangers.
Above the Below is based on a story outline by Owen, which was then developed into a script by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent.
Filming began in November 2023 in London, taking place at Pinewood Studios to utilize the full underwater studio there. Principal photography was completed by February 2024
Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin co-star.
The shoot was done as practically as possible, with the cast undergoing training to hold their breaths for several minutes at a time. A full spacecraft was also built and submerged at Pinewood for the shoot.
Above the Below is in cinemas from December 4th.
