Character actor Pruitt Taylor Vince has been cast in Superman as Clark’s adopted Earth father, Jonathan Kent, according to a report in The Wrap. As Superman was previously called Superman: Legacy, and deals with Kal El trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing on Earth, this character could play a key role.
In most versions of Superman’s story, his homely upbringing by Johnathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas, is what informs his personality, his morals, and his sense of duty. It is common for Jonathan’s death to feature in some form, and for this to serve as a trigger.
He doesn’t always die. Several versions of the story feature an elderly Jonathan still as his son’s moral guide.
The role was famously played by Glenn Ford in 1978’s Superman, and Kevin Costner in 2013’s Man of Steel. A version who survived Clark’s childhood was Eddie Jones in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
Before Superman, Taylor Vince can be seen starring as a series regular in the Apple TV+ series Lady in the Lake opposite Natalie Portman.
He had a recurring role in Netflix’s Stranger Things, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Heroes Reborn, True Blood, The Walking Dead, The Mentalist, and Murder One. He won an Emmy for that performance.
He appeared opposite Sandra Bullock in Birdbox opposite Sandra Bullock and with John Travolta in The Life and Death of John Gotti.
He joins a cast that includes David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Wendell Pierce, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Anthony Carrigan. Filming is underway through until late summer for a July 2025 release.
