Apple TV+, the little streamer that could, continues to pump content that you had no idea was coming but you kinda want to watch. Like Stick. This new sports comedy series stars Owen Wilson, Peter Dager, Marc Maron, Timothy Olyphant, Mariana Treviño, Lilli Kay, and Judy Greer.
Golf appears to be a well-trodden path for sports comedy, from Happy Gilmore to the all-time champ that is Caddyshack. Something about those silly shorts, too tight grandfather t-shirts, and the walking around an immaculately manicured landscape, smacking a tiny ball with a stick.
In Stick, Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill. He’s an ex-pro-golfer who lost his career prematurely 20 years ago. His marriage has collapsed, and he has been fired from his job at a sporting goods store. With nowhere to go and nothing to lose, he bets his future on a 17-year-old golf prodigy called Santi (Dager).
Unsurprisingly, the Apple TV+ blurb says this is a:
“…heartfelt, feel-good comedy about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.”
The whole project has the backing of, seemingly, the entire golf community. Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, and Wyndham Clark will appear.
Stick is from Ford v Ferrari writer Jason Keller, who is the creator and showrunner. The series premieres on Apple TV+ on June 4th.
