Box Office Does Absolutely Nothing

A terrible weekend at the box office has now passed. There were no major disasters keeping people glued to news channels, but nobody went to the movies.

Well, very few. According to the ever-reliable Box Office Mojo, this weekend is looking like the lowest-grossing weekend of the year so far, below even Super Bowl weekend.

Strongly reviewed new releases didn’t ignite the box office as Jack Quaid’s Novocaine tops the box office with $8.5 million. Among the other new releases is Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag coming in at $7 million in third place, with those two movies split by Mickey 17.

Also new is Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up with $3.1 million in fifth slot, The Last Supper sixth with $2.8 million, and the John Malkovich-led Opus not even cracking the top ten and making just $1 million.

So we are left with the hilarious position that cinemas are pinning all their current hopes on Disney’s much-troubled Snow White, which drops this week. Get your tin helmets on Outposters. It might be a long summer!

Mickey 17 will be on streaming as early as next week. Meanwhile, the rest of the top ten is made up of Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, which has already plummeted to fourth place, with Paddington in Peru, The Monkey, Dog Man, and Last Breath.
