According to a report in Variety, Paramount Pictures has confirmed which Call of Duty era their upcoming film adaptation of the 1st person shooter series will be set in.
The Activision franchise has featured games set across World War 2 and the Cold War, and even into the near future and far future with titles like Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare. So the question was always which sub-series within the games would the new movie follow? The favorites had to be the two dominant game series – Black Ops and Modern Warfare.
Well, the answer is Modern Warfare. The reveal took place during a Call of Duty in Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in NYC on Saturday. The film’s director and co-writer, Peter Berg, took the stage to drop the news.
This is interesting, as the Modern Warfare games are largely centred around Captain John Price (in the games voiced by Barry Sloane), Sergeant Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick (Elliot Knight), Captain John ‘Soap’ MacTavish (Kevin McKidd) and their team – Task Force 141. These are British SAS.
The film adaptation is being created by Yellowstone, Landman, and Dutton Ranch mastermind Taylor Sheridan who is, to put it mildly, fully immersed in and completely adept at pure Americana. Seeing how these two things converge could be interesting.
Most of the games are set around the Middle East, Russia, and Eastern Europe and feature covert missions, separatists, and regional strongmen.
Which of the main characters will make the jump? And how? I tis unlikely that Sloane, Knight, McKidd, and other actors from the games will make the jump to the big screen.
Call of Duty is slated to open in cinemas on June 30th 2028.
