Danny McBride has penned the script for an upcoming G.I. Joe feature, beating out a rival project from Max Landis. Now it looks as if he will make his directorial debut for the movie, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.
In other G.I. Joe news, there has been a change in the lead. Chris Hemsworth was originally circling the lead role. He has had to bail as the MCU is getting busy again. In his place, Bradley Cooper will now take over.
Nexus Point News reports that Cooper is on board, and the project could film later this year. McBride and Cooper have a working relationship that spans Cameron Crowe’s Aloha through to McBride’s own The Righteous Gemstones.
Currently, Cooper is filming the Ocean’s Eleven prequel. He wrote it, and is directing it. He would then roll straight off that onto G.I. Joe.
Three live-action G.I. Joe films have ranged from quite successful to out-and-out flop. There were hints of a crossover with Transformers in a credits stinger to the last Transformers movie, but that has come to nothing.
Your mileage may vary, but I would wager most Outposters have core G.I. Joe memories built around the staggeringly brilliant Larry Hama comics, and the fact that ownership of the USS Flagg was a direct indicator as to how rich your friends parents really were.
