Cruise Wanted For VICE Villainy

Tom Cruise’s turn as the villain in 2004’s Collateral is still lauded today. You could also argue that Les Grossman is also a villain, and in that role, Cruise was the single best thing in Tropic Thunder. Now, a new report from DanielRPK says that Cruise may have a third villain role in his sights for Miami Vice.

Cruise collaborator Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) is spinning up a new film adaptation of the iconic 1980s NBC series for Universal Pictures. Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer penned the script for the film that is said to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season.

Miami-Vice

The various press releases say it will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami as it follows the two detectives undercover.

Collateral was directed by original Miami Vice producer Michael Mann, who himself directed a 2006 reboot movie based on the show, so it’s all connected.

Austin Butler is rumored to be in talks to play the co-lead role of James ‘Sonny’ Crockett, with freshly minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan as detective Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs. If Kosinski gets Cruise to sign on, then it will be their third project together.

Miami Vice is set for release in cinemas on August 6th, 2027.
