Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was another of those recent box office failures that had nothing to do with the quality of the product.
Based on what seemed, on paper, a powerful IP, it did not perform anywhere near expectations and that was a real shame.
It was funny, heartfelt, and entertaining. It had a good cast, decent FX and a great score. It got good reviews from both audiences and critics.
Yet nobody motivated themselves to actually go out and watch it. In a lot of ways, it was a similar event to the more recent Masters Of The Universe movie.
Dungeons & Dragons ended up making only $208 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. Just like Masters Of The Universe is currently doing, it eventually seemed to find its audience on streaming and via good word of mouth.
Now, co-writer and director Jonathan Goldstein has confirmed that a sequel might have been a lot further along than anyone expected.
In an interview with Screen Rant at Comic-Con, he revealed that a script had already been written:
“We actually wrote a sequel to ‘Dungeons & Dragons.’ We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons.
They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”
Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis co-starred in the film.
Hugh Grant’s villain was particularly good fun, and the hit rate of the humor surprised many people who saw the movie.
Goldstein and Daley are currently developing a new Star Trek movie at Paramount.
