Gareth Edwards was a late addition to the crew for Jurassic World: Rebirth after the previous director stepped away. As a result, he had to work at speed and pretty much shoot David Koepp’s script exactly as it came off the page.
The studio was extremely happy with what he pulled off, and Rebirth became the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2025 with a haul of more than $869 million worldwide against a budget of around $200 million. It was also nominated for a VFX Oscar.
So it was all systems go on a sequel, and Edwards was to return alongside Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis and Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid. A happy ship, sailing off to a new adventure.
Well, not anymore.
The Hollywood Reporter indicates Edwards has exited the film over the much-occurring “creative differences”. There is no further detail, however it is probably fair to speculate that after he pulled off the difficult job with the last movie, he may have expected a degree of creative input and maybe the producers were expecting the reliable Yes Man to return.
The movie has not been officially greenlit yet, but schedules are being drawn up as Koepp returns to write the script again.
