Eggers Locks LABYRINTH Sequel

Nosferatu is still rattling around theaters, and just a few days ago director Robert Eggers announced that another period horror – Werwulf – will be his next movie. Then, straight after that came more news about Eggers. He has closed the deal to write and direct a Labyrinth sequel for Sony’s TriStar.

The report appeared at Deadline and says that no details are known at this stage other than the project being a sequel, not a reboot or reimagining. The 1986 original underperformed at the time, but is now considered something of a fantasy classic.

Robert-Eggers

Eggers is writing the script with Sjón, his writing partner on several projects including The Northman. The two are already working together on the script for Werwulf, said to be set in 13th-century England.

Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce the new Labyrinth movie. The Henson connection from the original is preserved, with Lisa Henson and Brian Henson as executive producers. Back at Christmas, we reported that Eggers was involved in this project, but that it was rumored to be a reboot. This now appears not to be the case.

Labyrinth

Jennifer Connelly starred in the original as a teenager who has to navigate a fantastical maze to rescue her baby brother who has been kidnapped by the Goblin King, memorably played by David Bowie.

Labyrinth 2 is likely to be Eggers’ first project after Werwulf.
