For a box office mega-franchise, things have gone a bit quiet in the world of Fast and Furious. Especially as the next instalment is supposed to herald the end of the main series. Fast X seemingly suffered from the post-COVID slump and reluctance of movie-goers to return to theaters, so the box office was not what Universal had come to expect.
The increasingly bonkers, but guilty pleasure movies have been building towards something. The last movie left things looking very grim indeed for the crew. So grim, in fact, that even the twin superpowers of “Car” and “Fambly” may not be able to save them this time.
Fast X 2, if that is the title, is now looking at an April 2027 release. This was confirmed by star and producer Vin Diesel when he appeared at FuelFest in Southern California over the weekend.
He confirmed the movie will return to Los Angeles as the main setting, featuring a return to the core of the franchise. He also confirmed that Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner character will return in some capacity.

Walker launched the franchise with Diesel, and was still filming the 5th instalment when his life was tragically cut short in a car accident in 2013. Further appearances in the movies were achieved using his brothers as body doubles, with Walker’s face superimposed via FX trickery.
Will it be another short cameo, or will they attempt to go “Full Tarkin” for this final version? Face matching tech has been improving at pace since the 2010’s and with AI enhancements in the process, there could be potential here.
