Michael

Globes Rejects MICHAEL From Category

The Golden Globes are more than a little infamous. If it is not Ricky Gervais making a room full of Hollywood A-listers squirm by telling them a few home truths dressed up as comedy, it was a former president trying to touch up Brendan Fraser… allegedly.

Another area where they attract some attention is their somewhat confusing allocation of movies to categories. Song packed biopics like A Complete Unknown and Elvis are excluded from the Musical/Comedy category, while things like The Martian and this year’s Obsession get in. Make it make sense?

Golden-Globes

This year, they have excluded Michael from the category after Lionsgate made the submission.

The Golden Globes own rules state:

“…a musical can be a comedy or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot.”

The response is that the musical performances in Michael did drive the narrative.

Lionsgate can now either appeal or put Michael into another category. The trouble is that movies like The Odyssey are lurking elsewhere.
