After decades of wheel spinning, Gremlins 3 is finally making some progress. So says original star Zach Galligan.
Galligan was the lead in Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) and was at Manchester Comic-Con in England last week. He said things are moving now at Warner Bros. Largely due to the success of another legacy sequel from the same period.
“After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actually cost less than $100 million to make. An absolute bargain in todays terms. It made $452 million and its marketing costs were also quite low, powered on by brand recognition and a built in audience who loved the original.
This looks like a highly repeatable formula to Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Pam Abdy did previously say they were looking at new instalments of Gremlins and The Goonies alongside Spielberg and Amblin.
A recent HBO Max animated Gremlins series put Galligan back in the role of Billy in voice form.
