HAROLD & KUMAR Are Back

I can’t say I’ve seen the Harold & Kumar movies; they just never appealed to me. They did appeal to everyone else, though, as there have been 3 movies where they go to White Castle, Guantanamo Bay and Christmas in 3D in 2011.

It’s now 14 years later, and Harold and Kumar are back in a “long-awaited sequel”, is it though? According to THR, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have closed a deal to write a fourth movie. You probably know those names as the creators of Cobra Kai.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg have said:

“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”

The two directors are best known for Cobra Kai, but they first got one of their breaks on Harold & Kumar. The pair wrote the first movie, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. They have also written American Reunion, which was the fourth of the American Pie movies. I think I gave up after the first one of them.

No official casting has been announced yet, but most expect John Cho and Kal Penn to return as the title characters. There is no news if Neil Patrick Harris will be back either. I didn’t know he was in the first three.

The studio is keeping the story of a fourth movie under wraps, but Penn has said in the past that if there were a fourth one, it would be about Harold & Kumar having kids (not together, though):

“Well, if it’s Christmas-wise they’ve probably smoked a little bit, maybe eating some turkey and Brussels sprouts. You know, doing their thing. But they also had kids in the third one, right?”

“So they’re probably doing it the way that only they do. I hesitate even answering that question because all of us want to do a fourth movie, we just need to figure out the right timing. You’ve got the 20-year anniversary coming up, so maybe we can figure out something by then.”

No one knows when Harold & Kumar will return, but with Cobra Kaiover, the directors can now focus on it.
