Actress Amber Heard has taken to Instagram to thank fans for coming out to support Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The movie landed with a thud on launch, pulling in just $81 million in the US so far.
However, overseas it seems to have picked up some steam. It is still number 1 at the box office in some key overseas territories and is about to breach $175 million outside the US.
A far cry from the $1 billion totals of the first installment, and probably still heading into a loss, but maybe avoiding the label of complete bomb.
Heard said:
“After all this time, Aquaman 2 made its splash (sorry, it’s too easy) Thank you to all of my fans for the overwhelming support and love in Mera’s AQ return. Thank you so much #aquaman”
There was very little press for the movie, and it notably did not have a glitzy premiere, as Warner Bros. seemed embarrassed by the DCEU and just wanting it to go away. Heard, Nicole Kidman, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II were very quiet on the promotional front. Heard’s silence was, perhaps, not a surprise as she claimed in court that Warner Bros. wanted her gone from the movie after the defamation trial vs. Johnny Depp.
So the DCEU ends with a whimper of Black Adam, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, and now Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.
Meanwhile the James Gunn / Peter Safran reboot of the universe as the DCU gathers more pace.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is playing in theaters now, and will no doubt be on a streamer near you imminently.
