Here at the Last Movie Outpost, we do what we can to big up all kinds of movies. Not’s not all action and horror; there are also movies like Big Girls Don’t Cry.
I don’t know about you, but I have no idea about the pressure young girls are under due to things like social media. So it’s nice to see a movie that deals with that. Right? Am I right, guys?
Big Girls Don’t Cry stars Ani Palmer, Noah Taylor, Rain Spender, Beatrix Wofle, Ngataitangirua Hita, Sophie Kirkwood Smith, Tara Canton, and Ian Blackburn. Paloma Schneideman is the writer and director. The story is:
Rural New Zealand, 2006. Over one transformative summer, 14 year-old Sid Bookman discovers desire, identity and the internet, as she imitates the people she longs to be loved by.
The rest of the details for Big Girls Don’t Cry are from the press release. It’s the summer holidays in rural New Zealand, and fourteen-year-old Sid has nothing to fill them. Her father has checked out, and her only window onto a bigger life is a borrowed MSN account.
Online and off, she watches the older teens who seem to move through the world so easily, and tries on their attitudes like stolen clothes. What she feels for them is part envy, part something she doesn’t yet have the words for.
Newcomer Ani Palmer gives a fearless lead performance as Sid, alongside Noah Taylor (Peaky Blinders, Almost Famous) and Rain Spencer (Good Girl Jane, The Summer I Turned Pretty). Rich in period detail and unflinching in its honesty, this is a coming-of-age film for anyone who remembers being fourteen, and for anyone still not entirely sure they’ve worked themselves out.
Big Girls Don’t Cry will be in cinemas on the 27th November. Now, let’s read the talkback.
