Indie Trailer: HEAVYWEIGHT

Boxing is an odd sport; two guys get in this ring and try to punch the other guy until he’s knocked out. Boxing does make for some interesting stories, though, like Heavyweight, a new indie movie.

Heavyweight stars Jason Isaacs, Joplin Sibtain, Sienna Guillory, Jamie Bamber, Nicholas Pinnock, Osy Ikhile, Adrian Lukis, Alana Boden, and Jordan Bolger. Christopher M. Anthony is the writer and director.

Anthony has directed music videos for KT Tunstall and worked on visual effects for movies like Harry Potter, V for Vendetta, Sunshine, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Kingsman: The Golden Circle. He’s also worked as a stunt performer.

The story for Heavyweight is:

A boxing coach prepares an underdog for a career-defining boxing championship match, as their world starts to collapse under the pressure.

I like the idea of the pressure of a boxing match, not the actual match itself. We’ve had movies about being in the ring, the best one being Real Steel, sorry, I mean Rocky. It looks like Heavyweight focuses on the psychology of the fight.

Producer Kevin Harvey has said about the movie:

“We are thrilled with being chosen as the opening film at Raindance, HEAVYWEIGHT is a film that needs to be experienced, it truly is a diverse British film which explores a part of elite sport that is rarely seen.”

Heavyweight seems to be filmed in ‘real time’, as the run-up to the boxing match takes place. I joked at the beginning that boxing is two guys just trying to punch each other out, but there’s so much more to it.

Boxing is about knowing your opponent; how does he fight? How does he think? And then about knowing yourself. I have asked for a screener of the movie, as it looks really interesting.

Heavyweight will have its premiere on the 18th of June.
