JOKER 2: FOLIE A DEUX Trailer

CinemaCon in Las Vegas has been happening, and Hollywood is pulling out all the stops to make sure everyone knows what movies are coming out. CinemaCon is the “largest and most important” gathering of movie theater owners in the world, where studios showcase their upcoming wares in the hope of impressing their main distribution channel owners. Yesterday, there was a teaser for Joker: Folie a Deux:

Hot on its heels, there is now a full first trailer online:

What do you think? I don’t know much about the history of Batman, but I always thought Harley was Joker’s psychiatrist. Here she seems to be a follow inmate in Arkham Asylum. It looks like Arthur and Harley escape the confines and wreak havoc on the streets of Gotham.

Joker: Folie a Deux sees Joquin Phoenix back as Arther alongside Zazie Beats, Lady Gaga, Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Ken Leung, and Steve Coogan. Todd Phillips is directing and writing a script with Scott Silver, they both worked on the original Joker.

A Surprise Hit

Phillips spoke before the trailer at CinemaCon and said how surprised he was that Joker (2019) was such a hit. While making the original, Phoenix and he talked about a sequel but didn’t want to jinx it.

Joker went on to be nominated for 11 Oscars and made just over $1 billion at the box office. Warner Brothers were keen for a sequel and putting up $200 million for Folie a Deux. The original had a budget of just $55 million.

While making Joker, Phillips was one of the producers of A Star is Born (2028), starring Lady Gaga. When he started writing a sequel to Joker, he had her in mind as Harley Quinn. Everything fell into place and Joker: Folie a Deux is now a thing.

I just looked up what Folie a Deux means, according to Wiki:

Folie à deux, also known as shared psychosis or shared delusional disorder, is a rare psychiatric syndrome in which symptoms of a delusional belief, and sometimes hallucinations, are “transmitted” from one individual to another.

That’s pretty clever and you’ve all learnt something new today.

Joker: Folie a Deux is in cinemas on the 4th of October.
