Simon Kinberg was one of the founding forces behind the well-received Star Wars: Rebels.
He has a long resume, with successes like Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, and big misses like Josh Trank’s 2015 Fantastic Four.
His moves into directing have been less successful, with X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The 355 failing with both critics and at the box office.
So it is fair to say that the reaction to the news that he was spinning up a new Star Wars trilogy was… mixed.
That said, given Lucasfilm’s track record with actually getting new Star Wars projects to the big screen, it was doubtful that it would ever see the light of day.
They might be breaking that habit. The Mandalorian & Grogu is about to be followed up with Star Wars: Starfighter, and the rumor is that the Kinberg trilogy is not only still happening, but has found a director.
The big news is that it isn’t Kinberg, and he wasn’’t considered.
According to a posting on X (as reported by Dark Horizons) journalist Caleb Williams claimed:
“A director has been found for the new #StarWars trilogy by screenwriter Simon Kinberg. Kinberg wasn’t considered.”
The name of this new director isn’t revealed yet, but they say the director is locked.
Story details about the new trilogy are to known, but it is expected to take place after the events of the Skywalker Saga.
