Lundgren & Baccarin Talk HE-MAN

Is it wrong that one of the upcoming films I am most curious about is Masters Of The Universe? Why? Well, it could be spectacular, or a spectacular disaster. It could bring something from our childhood wonderfully to life on screen, or completely fail. My curiosity keeps rising as I hear more about it. I have no idea what the result will be, but I want to find out.

After years in development, and several studios trying and failing to make progress, the deep pockets of Amazon MGM Studios have mobilised, and Nicholas Galitzine will become only the second big-screen He-Man, following Dolph Lundgren in the infamous Cannon Films attempt.

Lundgren is tipped to make an appearance in the new movie, as he was in London when this version was filming and has remained enigmatic about his presence there, saying:

“Maybe, yeah, you will have to check it out when it comes out.”

Online rumor is that he will appear briefly as King D’Vann Grayskull, ancestor of He-Man and the man behind the legend of Castle Grayskull. Lundgren spoke in an interview about why he still likes the idea of the property, and why its time may have come:

“If you think a new He-Man movie makes you feel old, I feel old! I was in it! They’ve been trying to remake the picture for at least 15 years, and I’m glad they’re doing it. There’s a great cast, a great crew. It’s a big budget picture with MGM/Amazon. I think they’re doing a great job.

Prince Adam has a bit more romanticism to the character than other superheroes. Marvel and DC are a little harder-edged. There’s something magical and childlike about it. And even though they’re kind of making an adult picture, there’s something soft and positive about that character.”

Also talking her involvement is Morena Baccarin, who will play The Sorceress, guardian of Castle Grayskull and its magical secrets. Also revealed in the lore to be the mother of Teela.

She gave an interview to Variety:

“I grew up watching He-Man, my brother and I, so it was a really big part of my childhood. It was really cool once I got there and saw the costume and what they had in mind for me — the whole get-up and the wig and contacts and all of it. I’m so excited to see what they make of it because I feel like my part of it was just such a small element to what it’s going to actually be in the end.”

Master Of The Universe co-stars Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, with James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley as Adam’s parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena. It opens in cinemas next June.
