Mia Goth is back as MaXXXine, in the third movie from Ti West. A new trailer is online.
MaXXXine is a sequel to X and Pearl and is something, hopefully, to look forward to. In this new movie, Maxine (Goth) heads to LA to make her name as an actress. However, a mysterious killer stalks her and “a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”
Joining Goth and West for this third movie is Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Halsey, Moses Summney, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.
Goth says the movie is an old-fashioned whodunit, but also teased it as a superhero movie:
“That’s how I read the script. Maxine, as a character, has come a long way. She’s a survivor, she’s gone through a lot. When we meet her again, in this new world that she’s in, she’s really fought for everything that she has, and she’s not about to give that up.”
“She’s going to fight for what she has. She’s a badass. There’s a strength to her. And she’s a really proactive, determined, focused woman. She goes after what she wants, and she’s not really going to take no for an answer.“
Both X and Pearl did quite well and it looks like this might end the trilogy well. Although, both Goth and West have talked about franchise. If MaXXXine does well, I hope they just finish it there, but we know what Hollywood is like.
Which Was Better?
As stated, the first two movies were OK. X started well, but the premise of two very old people being the bad guys didn’t pan out for me. Pearl I thought was a much better instalment and I liked it a lot.
X was about a group heading to the countryside to shoot an adult movie. As the day turns to night, they find they are in a fight for their lives. As I said, the old couple, moving at 0.5mph just didn’t really make this scary for me and I lost interest.
Pearl was a prequel. Set in 1918, young Pearl wants to be a star and escape the isolation of her parent’s farm. It sets up how Pearl becomes the killer she was in X.
