Late last week, the world got its first real look at Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed passion project Megalopolis. An image was released from the movie, and immediately people tried to figure out exactly what they were looking at.
Now, Coppola himself has released a clip onto the internet. It is a single scene that sees Adam Driver’s character climbing out a window on New York’s Chrysler building and about to plummet to his death when… something strange happens.
The $120 million-budgeted epic is to premiere at Cannes in just a few weeks. Already, the image and the clip seem to echo what Coppola said about HG Wells as inspiration, specifically Things To Come.
Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman, and James Remar all co-star alongside Driver.
Megalopolis tells the story of a failing civilization, unable to solve its own social problems. A woman is torn between loyalties to her father, who has a classical view of society, and her lover, who is more progressive and ready for the future.
The project is yet to secure a distributor outside of France.
