Despite Simon Pegg having already finished his filming on the latest Mission: Impossible movie, they are apparently still casting. Taiwanese-American actor Stephen Oyoung is the latest to join the cast.
Oyoung’s role is not known. The actor appears in Twisters and his filmography includes Sicario and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. He was also a fight coordinator and sword trainer on movies such as The Equalizer and The Force Awakens.
So it is safe to presume it will probably be a fairy stunt-heavy role.
The whole franchise has become a seemingly creative way of funding Tom Cruise’s extreme sports addiction, and is said to be coming to an end after this installment as there is a limit to how long Cruise can continue. No Cruise, no Mission: Impossible.
It is also in danger of collapsing under its own sheer scale, as ballooning budgets have damaged profitability. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning pulled in $567.5 million, which was way down on the fourth and fifth movies, and way, way down on the sixth.
A listed gross production budget of $291 million for Dead Reckoning was rumored to be lowballing it. Reports suggest this final installment is already over $300 million and counting.
Mission: Impossible 8 will continue the story of Ethan Hunt’s pursuit of the sentient AI known as “The Entity”.
Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt all return and are joined by Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Katy O’Brian and Tramell Tillman.
Christopher McQuarrie directs again, and Mission: Impossible 8 opens in May 2025.
