Good Monday morning, Outposters. How was your weekend? I had the house to myself and enjoyed a full takeaway, all to myself. Being on my own, I also enjoyed some good movies, like The Spine of Night, which I’m still mulling over. I also watched Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons by Stephen Chow, which was stupidly good fun. I honestly haven’t laughed so much in a while.
Before the Monday memes, we need to have a moan. I’m sure you saw something over the weekend that you need to moan about this Monday.
My moan is about Pinocchio: Unstrung. I was kind of looking forward to this, and finally got around to watching it. I will say, it’s very well done. Rhys Frake-Waterfield is the creator of the Poohniverse, and I’m going to say it: He makes a good movie.
That comes with a big ‘however’, though. Pinocchio started off really well, with an original take on the story, and the practical doll was really creepy. However, as the movie went on, there were some really stupid production decisions. It turns out the doll only had 4 expressions, and after a while, it started to just look stupid. Casting Richard Brake was a mistake, as he starts off nice, but ends up being the bad guy…like every other movie he’s been in.
It was also stupid how it was set in the present, but Brake’s character had been recording everything on cine film, not digital. Why? So it looks cool playing it through a projector, even though a video projector would have worked. A genuine shame, as the rest of the movie was pretty good.
