This is going to be close Could Avatar be toppled at the top of the all time box office rankings, again? James Cameron’s sci-fi experiment was briefly knocked down to 2nd place by Avengers Endgame when the Marvel movie was first released.
Then, via a re-release, it regained the number one spot.
Well, two can play at that game, and Marvel has re-released Avengers Endgame with extra scenes to link into Avengers Doomsday. The result, Avengers Endgame: Encore, just had quite a big weekend at the box office.
Despite the fact that pretty much everyone on the planet can get to see the original on any one of their myriad of streaming platforms, plenty of people went out to see the movie this weekend.
It pulled in $86 million worldwide, split $26 million domestic and $60 million overseas.
This moves the lifetime worldwide gross for Avengers Endgame up to $2.885 billion, around $35 million behind Avatar on $2.92 billion.
Can Avengers catch Avatar? Depends how many people are still left who want to go see it again on the big screen. The race is on.
Second place was Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, with a worldwide total now past $195 million and a very happy studio,
Brad Pitt’s survival thriller Heart of the Beast was third with $20 million domestically and $30.1 million overseas.
Controversial Robert Pattinson-led Primetime was fourth with $19.1 million, but it is yet to open in most overseas markets.
Forgotten Island was fifth with $12.8 million domestic and $5.4 million overseas.
The box office will now be relatively quiet until the big hitters of Dune Part 3 and Avengers Doomsday drop to probably dominate Christmas.
