Ridley Scott’s historical epic Napoleon was the #1 movie in most major international markets this weekend. With $79 million and counting it beat off the other big names to top Worldwide box-office grosses, defying mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.
Domestically, in the US, it came in second place, behind The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes at $32.5 million vs. $42 million. The Hunger Games prequel is now edging up to $198 million.
Bear in mind, for purposes of box office, the industry classes this as a five-day holiday weekend in the USA.
Disney’s animated Wish was in third place with $31.7 million domestic and another $17.5 million global. It is still to open in some major overseas markets, but either way a $49 million global opening weekend for a new Disney animation is underperformance.
Trolls Band Together just keeps on trucking in fourth with $25.3 million domestic, then Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving with $11.1 million.
The Marvels continue to sink. A $9.2 million domestic adds to just $187 million globally so far, meaning it is now almost beyond doubt that this will be the lowest-grossing MCU entry to date.
Better news elsewhere for Five Nights at Freddy’s as that becomes the highest-grossing Blumhouse release of all time with a $283.1 million haul.
